My last visit

The time passed by and simply nothing happened. Colleagues and friends of my (ex-)wife sporadically e-mailed or messaged me, but still I didn't get any note from Bebeth herself. I felt downhearted and sad, not knowing what to do, somehow helpless due to being far away from Surigao City. The only way to figure out the truth seemed to be another trip to meet Bebeth personally and have a heart-to-heart talk about the future of our marriage, but inside my heart I was already preparing for a possible divorce thinking that this would probably be best for both of us.

Contrarily to my unsuccessful first attempt to organize a new trip, this time Bebeth's mother personally took over and helped with the planning. It wasn't easy for her as her daughter had forbidden her to contact me, so we needed to be smart not to be caught by my suspicious (ex-)wife. Surprisingly, the tradition enforcer was herself a victim of an untraditional, as it seems. An important role played a cousin named Tata who forwarded e-mails between us, because the mother wasn't skilled of how to use the Internet. I really owe a lot to Tata, thank you for your help!

North Eastern Mindanao College Bebeth though had become aware of the acting of her cousin which she surely considered high treason and she urged her father Jesus to tell Tata to leave the house of the family, where she helped for free boarding and lodging while studying. The alibi was her laziness, but surely this was fabricated only. Fortunately Tata could find a new home nearby the house of Bebeth's older sister Laxmie, where she moved into a small wooden house together with her sister, mother and niece. As Tata was still studying at the North Eastern Mindanao College, she really needed an affordable place to live.

Gaga and Tata on webcam Mid May 2005 I ordered my airtickets bound for Cebu on my usual way to Surigao. Bebeth's unwillingness to fetch me was foreseeable, so I was looking for an alternative trustworthy person. Since Tata had been altruistically maintaining contact as instructed by Bebeth's mother, my decision was clear to choose her as my personal guide and my way to express my appreciation. This idea displeased Bebeth's family and triggered illogical jealously to Tata's inconvenience. Actually Jochrys, Bebeth's older brother, was supposed to fetch me at the airport, but I insisted in Tata taking over this task.

After long discussions my decision was finally accepted by Bebeth's mother. Thus Tata, accompanied by her sister Gaga, became my official welcome committee, eventually. For emergency cases also some distant friends of mine living in Cebu were informed about my arrival and I also had a hotel reservation in Cebu City, as a last resort. Altogether I felt prepared for the new adventure by having a "plan B" or even a "plan C".

But a new obstacles threatened to shatter all my plans! Only about one week before my fixed departure date on June 27, I had a long talk online with Jochrys, who had something highly important to tell me. He showed up online on Yahoo and wrote the following messages:

johnchrysus (11:01:17): Hello Bro..i think we have to talk 1st before you decide to go Surigao..Why? Coz i have talk to bebeth this morning regarding your visit plan...im sorry to tell you that she want to put an end in your marriage. Another thing is she wont sign any papers that from you right here in the Phil during your visit. So i suggest that dont came here anylonger instead arrange her papers or visa going back to Germany and have annulment there coz she is willing to go there to support you in your divorce papers at her own expense including the fare only you want to process is the visa back her to Germnany...Im sorry but thats what bebeth wanted im just relaying it to you. So therefore cancel your trip to the Phil. instead.

johnchrysus (11:04:48): Im telling you this to lessen your expenses with no good result...so again i suggest that let her go to your country to make everything in place. She will provide her own fare and i

iring_na_lalaki (11:07:30): hi bro

johnchrysus (11:07:49): have talk to her friends in Germany for her stay while your papers is in court. Thats what she suggested and tell to me frankly...im sorry bro...but thats the bottomline when it comes to your relationship with bebeth.

Note: you can find the whole conversation here

So Bebeth did it again... She had heard about my upcoming visit to her place and tried to hinder by "generously" agreeing on helping me with the divorce and lessening my expenses? Of course I already had my tickets and canceling my trip would have meant big financial losses again. Additionally I really wanted to know what was up, so this time my decision was firm: No cancellation! Jochrys seemed to understand my statement and assured me of his help as my brother in law.

Hongkong airport After a while the flight itself seemed a routine, as it was my usual way stopping over in Hongkong, so on July 2 I landed in Cebu again. After passing the immigration and having waited for ages for my baggage, I exchanged some money at the best rate available (yes, meanwhile I was aware that there are differences) and passed the doors leading outside. Talaga! Tata and Gaga were waiting outside for fetching me and their presence made me feel safe instantly. Together we took a taxi cab (fixed price, no bargaining) and drove to the city, where we decided to go to the SM mall again for buying essential things I didn't bring including some pasalubong (gifts) for the family. We also had lunch at one of those numerous fast food chains and we packed the leftovers to bring them onto the ferry for dinner.

Tata on the ferry The ferry trip also was very familiar to me, as we traveled over night on tourist class again in a big air conditioned dormitory. Before we finally went to bed, we talked about the difficult situation and I showed lots of photos to my two companions. Since Bebeth had returned to the Phillipines 8 months before, she had never shown any pictures of her stay in Germany to anyone not even about our wedding, so those photos were all new to them. They surely understood me being highly nervous about my first encounter with Bebeth, so Gaga even gave me a picture of Jesus Christ as mental support which I put into my purse hoping that God would help me with my critical mission. Lying on my bed I tried to distract my mind by reading a book I bought in Cebu and finally tried to have some rest at least, while the never ending noise of the engines accompanied me into an uneasy sleep.
