She's gone

The next two weeks were rather exhausting for me, as I tried to find answers to all my doubts and questions by asking her and her friends. So far only Elena's words were plausible and eased my confused mind a bit. She was very sorry for this untoward happening and simply could no longer offer a refuge for Bebeth etc. because she had her own family to take care of and I was already grateful for her valuable assistance one week before the wedding. Anyway, we would need to get along together without any external help.

Bebeth had left her big trolley at our flat, which was too heavy for her to bring while traveling on a train. It seemed that she was leaving the flat for good already as nothing much was left over. All this caused me becoming rather depressive already. Even her mother had pleaded me to let her daughter come home for a vacation, so I didn't have any choice but letting her go. The week before her departure I drove again to Siegen and delivered the trolley as promised. We had a very nice coffee and cake together at Jerma's place, where Bebeth was staying at this time. This was an opportunity to have a long talk with the "whole gang" Jerma, Lanie, Elena and Nelva, but all this didn't help much, as Bebeth stood firmly to her decision. She was sitting beside us silently with tears in her eyes, while I was close to tears, too.

Besides being very depressed those days, I also got the feeling of missing something... How could I be sure that my wife would follow our agreement without repellence later? Friends' advises had made me suspicious and I began loosing my trust in Bebeth. So some kind of statement was created, which I brought with me for her to sign. First she was surprised and wondered about my urgency to have such a paper, but I managed to convince her to sign it eventually. This would give me at least an assurance and calm my mind, I explained to her.

My family and friends couldn't help much with this issue, as none of them had made a similar experience before. Really helpful was posting the situation on a Forum, where many people responded and tried to help. Rather soon it seemed to be a "strange case", as homesickness was surely a typical problem, but this behavior was even incredible for other Filipinas... The forum thread is still available here, but beware, it's a very long thread...

On October 27, 2004 Bebeth departed from Frankfurt together with her new best friend Lanie. Fortunately my mother and I had the opportunity to see them again before leaving, although we had arrived a little late at the airport due to heavy traffic on the highways. Responding to a txt and a call to Lanie's cellphone, both fortunately returned from the waiting hall behind the gate so we could have a short talk even though the airport security was very suspicious of our acting already.

Lanie was standing some metres away, but Bebeth came to the barrier so my mom and I could hug her good-bye. She didn't kiss me though and kept distance. The security guards had admonished us already... Maybe they were afraid of us trying to smuggle something into the aircraft. I had brought some items for her in a plastic bag, among those the digital camera she once had expected to get in Cebu when I departed for flying home... Fortunately there was another x-ray terminal, so after checking the bag she was able to take it with her on her way back to the waiting hall. My hope for maybe getting some new photos of her and her family by lending the camera to her should turn out to be vain though later, as I never got any pictures...

Maybe it was only the presence of my mom that made them coming back again after passing the gate, but who knows.

After their arrival in Manila I received a sms from Bebeth saying that she arrived in her homeland and that she wanted to say "thanks for everything". It really sounded like a good-bye forever. The following weeks I was always floating between being endlessly sad and becoming mad at her for not keeping me posted about her vacation. Instead of heading directly back to her family, strangely she decided to stay in Manila at Lanie's newly built house, though she had told me that she was missing her family most.

But things even became worse...
